The two 2010 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptors (CVPI) replace two older cruisers (a 1998 and 2000 CVPI) that were put out of service due to safety issues.
The cars have several features to meet the demands of police service in the town of Ashby for years to come such as; a 4.6 litre V8 High Output Police Interceptor engine, heavy duty transmission and brakes. The LED emergency lighting provides higher visibility with less stress on the electrical system.
The cars also have two-way radios which allows the officer to communicate directly with officers from the Ashburnham, Fitchburg and Townsend Police Departments.

Officer receives praise from Highway Superintendant. |
| |
Chief Drew,
Earlier this week we had a flooding issue on Harris Rd in town. Although we could keep the road open for emergency vehicles, standard traffic could not get thru due to the water levels. It is my understanding that meals on wheels contacted the dispatch center about not being able to deliver meals to the residents of that road. I later heard that Officer Derek Pepple not only offered to, but delivered the meals using the 4X4 Expedition. In my opinion that was both a generous and meaningful gesture to the residents of that road. I felt that I'd make mention of it in case no one else thought to.
Sincerely,
Bill Davis
Highway Supt.

Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest. Mobilization |
| |
In a continued effort to keep Massachusetts roadways safe, the Ashby Police, along with Massachusetts State Police, today announced the start of the "Drunk Driving. Over the Limit. Under Arrest." Mobilization. The statewide effort involving extra traffic enforcement and public information will run throughout the holiday season from December 11, 2009 through January 3, 2010.
Drunk driving is a serious crime. In Massachusetts, a first offense for Operating Under the Influence (OUI) is punishable with a fine of up to $5,000 or by imprisonment for up to two and a half years, or both.
The advice is basic: don't drink and drive. Yet, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, more than 120 people died in substance-related vehicle crashes in Massachusetts in 2008. This statewide effort, funded by the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security with $660,000 in federal grant funding, aims to reduce that number.
During this mobilization, the Ashby Police are joining over 210 other local police departments and the Massachusetts State Police to crack down on drunk drivers across the Commonwealth.

Ashby officers praised by judge, DA, and Chief |
| |
11 August 2009
Honorable Board of Selectmen
895 Main Street
Ashby, Massachusetts 01431
Dear Sirs:
Recently an Ashby resident pled guilty in several cases related to domestic violence, theft from vehicles, and auto theft. I spoke with the Assistant District Attorney assigned to the cases and he was very appreciative and complimentary of the solid work done by the Ashby Police Department. From his comments and my own observations during the investigations, it is clear that the efforts by the Ashby Police Department were instrumental in protecting the public and securing multiple convictions. The ADA remarked that the police case preparation was "excellent" and "remarkable". In particular he praised the following officers:
Officer Vautour: for a good report on one of the domestic violence cases.
Officer Dillon: for a "great job investigating" the cases. He also praised the use of palm print evidence that Dillon obtained in partnership with the State Police. I observed that Dillon's persistence in the domestic violence cases and his rapport with victims, witnesses and suspect helped bring these cases to a successful conclusion.
Officer Alden: for doing an excellent job of preparing the various cases as the police prosecutor and taking the extra step of arranging transportation for a victim to appear at the trial. As a member of the Ayer District Court High-Risk Domestic Violence team, he saw that the full weight of the system was brought to bear on the suspect. The ADA said that Alden is one of the top police prosecutors in Ayer District Court, consistently preparing cases for successful outcomes.
The ADA said that even the judge remarked in the court record that the cases were very well investigated and handled by the members of the Ashby Police Department.
The citizens of Ashby should be as proud as I am of the excellent work done by their police officers.
Respectfully submitted,
Paul H. Lundin
Chief of Police

Media release--Unlocked cars broken into in Ashby |

Ashby Police Department Media Release
Unlocked cars broken into in Ashby
Ashby - Over the past week numerous Ashby residents have reported thefts from their cars while parked overnight. 16 residents have been victimized with a total of 27 vehicles entered and thefts from 22 of them. The incidents are probably happening between the hours of midnight and sunrise. Most thefts have occurred in the northeast section of town but some have been more spread out. The thieves have taken popular and easily transportable items such as GPS units, satellite radio, wallets, cash, cell phones, and CDs.
All cars were unlocked and parked near the roadway. In some cases multiple cars were parked next to each other with unlocked cars being entered and locked cars left alone. Chief Lundin said "obviously these crimes are being committed by criminals looking for an easy payday. They are easily finding cars next to the roadway, unlocked, and containing hundreds of dollars of valuables."
Residents are urged to remove valuables from parked cars, lock up, and immediately report any suspicious activity and try to note descriptions and license plates.

Senator Kerry sponsors bill for police facilities, mentions Ashby Police station |
| |
BOSTON - Citing the crumbling conditions of certain police headquarters in Western Massachusetts, U.S. Sen. John F. Kerry on Thursday filed legislation to provide $500 million a year for upgrading and constructing police buildings in the nation.
Kerry, a Massachusetts Democrat, filed the "Protect Those Who Serve Act" in Washington. The bill could help partly because new police stations are among the projects ineligible for federal stimulus money.
"It's an insult that we've got police and law enforcement officers stuck working in temporary trailers in Ashby, shuttered dinosaur museums in Granby and even working out of their cruisers on the street in Brimfield," Kerry said in a statement.

Wheeler Road bridge to close |
| |
As of March 31st the Wheeler Road bridge that connects Ashby and Townsend will be closed. The following is a message from Greg Barnes, Townsend Town Administrator.
Statement from Mr. Barnes:
Based on a recent inspection by the State's District Bridge Inspection Unit, the Wheeler Road Bridge has been determined to be unsafe for vehicular traffic.
Hence, residents should make immediate plans to use alternative routes of
travel. The bridge is likely to be officially blocked off to all vehicular
traffic as early as March 31, 2009.
I am well aware of the inconvenience that shutting down the bridge will
cause many of Ashby's residents. On behalf of Townsend, I truly apologize
for this. However, in light of the strong recommendation of the State, I
think that we have no other option at this time than to shut it down or
otherwise incur potential severe liability should anything go wrong.
I will be discussing this issue with the Board of Selectmen tomorrow night.

From Mass.gov
The Executive Office of Public Safety and Security, Massachusetts State Police, state transportation officials, emergency responders, roadway maintenance professionals and other concerned parties gathered today to raise awareness of the state's new Move Over Law and promote safe driving across the Commonwealth. Joining them was State Trooper Dana Cresta, who was injured when he was struck by a driver last year while he was out of his cruiser on a prior motor vehicle stop.
The new Move Over Law, which takes effect March 22, aims to protect police, firefighters, paramedics, tow truck drivers, and all roadside emergency and maintenance workers. The law requires all drivers approaching a stationary emergency or maintenance vehicle with flashing lights to move to the next adjacent lane if it is safe to do so, and, barring that, to reduce their speed. Drivers who violate the Move Over Law face a fine of up to $100.

Click It or Ticket Mobilization |
| |
The advice is basic: buckle up or pay the price. Yet more than 30 percent of Massachusetts drivers still fail to buckle up. In our continued effort to increase seat belt use, the Ashby Police Department joins many other Massachusetts police departments and the Massachusetts State Police in support of the Fall 2008 Click It or Ticket Mobilization. This statewide effort runs through 30 November and combines extra traffic enforcement, public information, and community outreach to reduce motor vehicle-related fatalities, injuries and economic loss.
For the Click It or Ticket Mobilization, the Executive Office of Public Safety and Security (EOPSS) has provided $1.3 million in federal highway safety funds.
Regular seat belt use is the single most effective way to protect people and reduce fatalities in motor vehicle crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. Research has shown that when lap and shoulder belts are used properly, the risk of fatal injury to front seat passengers is reduced by 45 percent, and the risk of moderate to serious injury is reduced by 50 percent.
Since its first Click It or Ticket Mobilization in 2002, Massachusetts has seen its seat belt use increase 16% to 67% in 2008. However, Massachusetts still lags behind the 2008 national seat belt use rate of 83%.

Ashby Police Officer threatened with machete |
| |
An Ashby Police Officer responding to a 911 call was threatened by a man wielding a machete on Thursday night.
Police arrested Thomas Paglieroni, 20, of 203 Davis Road, Ashby and charged him with aggravated assault, a felony, and resisting arrest.
At about 7:42 p.m. on Thursday night, police received an abandoned 911 call from 203 Davis Road. Officer Derek Pepple responded to check that everything was alright and he was met at the front of the house by Paglieroni who was yelling at the officer and denying him entry to the house despite the officer hearing Paglieroni's grandfather telling him to let the police in.
Once inside the house Paglieroni took up a fighting stance then ran to a bedroom. He emerged with a machete and held it in a threatening manner refusing all commands to drop it. Officer Pepple pepper sprayed Paglieroni who ran into a bathroom and locked himself inside with his grandmother.
Another Ashby officer arrived as well as officers from Townsend and New Ipswich Police Departments. The grandmother was let out of the bathroom and after several minutes Paglieroni was talked out of the bathroom and taken into custody.
Ashby Police Chief Paul H. Lundin praised how Officer Pepple handled the situation and said that it points out the danger that officers face in small towns where back-up is far away. Lundin said, "happily we are reporting on an arrest this morning and not something more tragic."
Paglieroni was held on $5040 cash bail and appeared in Ayer District Court on Friday.

New Booster Seat Law Takes Effect July 10th |
| |
From Mass.Gov
Frequently Asked Questions on Massachusetts New Booster Seat Law
Why does my Child Need a Booster Seat?
Beginning July 10, 2008 a booster seat is required by law for children 5-7 years of age or until they reach 4'9" in height in the state of Massachusetts.
A booster seat helps your child fit correctly in your vehicle's safety belt. It positions the lap belt on the hips and the shoulder belt across the chest, providing the greatest amount of protection.
Motor vehicle crashes are the #1 killer of children between the ages of 4-8. Booster seats can reduce those injury rates by 58% over seat belt use for that age group.

The Ashby Police Department arrested six young men for possessing alcohol under the age of 21 on the night of Friday, May 30, 2008.
Police were called to a party on West Road when they encountered the youths in the driveway with beer. The youths fled the area. Officers determined that there was a supervised party going on and the youths were in a different area of the property. Through investigation the officers identified and charged the six youths.
Officers seized over 50 full beers and a bottle of rum and found many empties in the area that the youths had gathered.
The six youths charged were all between 17-19 years of age and from Tewksbury, Reading, Marblehead, Concord, and Milton.
Chief Lundin said that "this behavior causes too many tragedies; we will continue to enforce these laws in the hopes of preventing more serious crimes". He added that "if parents plan on leaving a teenager alone this summer, they can call [Chief Lundin] to arrange for special checks of the house to prevent unsupervised parties".

Ashby Police Patrolmen's Association Participates in Road Cleanup Day |
| |
Members of the Ashby Patrolmen's Association joined town residents in the annual road cleanup. Off-duty officers, Derek Pepple, John Dillon, Brian Vautour, Sean Zrate, and the chief volunteered their time on the Saturday morning of Memorial Day weekend to collect 40 tires, assorted large items,
and about 20 bags of roadside refuse.
Chief Paul H. Lundin credited Dillon with initiating the idea and Association President Pepple with rallying the troops.
While there is usually a fee to dispose of tires, Detective Dillon partnered with Pete Bezanson of Pete's Auto Service, who offered to dispose of the tires free of charge. Dillon then approached the
Chief about organizing a cleanup. Shortly thereafter the town announced its cleanup day, and the association decided to join in that effort.
The officers worked in two teams, one concentrating on tires throughout the town, and the other picking up garbage along Rindge Road.
Chief Lundin pointed out that cleaning up trash and tires goes beyond just tidying up. "When people see garbage and piles of tires along the road they may get the impression that the town doesn't care about what happens and they may be more likely to add to the trash or even commit more serious crimes," Lundin said.
The spirit of the officers was contagious. A town resident and state trooper saw them at work and joined them on the spot.
Chief Lundin commended the officers and stated that, "this is just one example of their dedication to the town's residents."

There have been recent sightings of black bear and cubs in Ashby. The following is excerpted from the Massachusetts Division of Fisheries and Wildlife website.
WHEN A BEAR IS SEEN IN A NEIGHBORHOOD
If a bear is sighted in town leave the animal alone. Keep dogs under control. Keep crowds away and avoid following the animal. Pursuit not only stresses the animal but it adds the risk of having a bear chased out into traffic or into a group of bystanders. In most situations, the animal will fade back into the forest.

3 (7 cm) or less: STAY OFF
4 (10 cm): ice fishing, walking, cross-country skiing, skating
5 (12 cm): one snowmobile or ATV

APD Adds New Cruiser, New Look to Fleet |
| |
The Ashby Police Department has purchased a new cruiser with funds voted at Town Meeting.
The 2008 Ford Crown Victoria Police Interceptor replaces a 1998 Ford that had over 144,000 miles when it was totaled in an accident while responding to a call in August 2007. Officer Derek Pepple oversaw the planning and design of the cruiser.
Most notable about the new cruiser is the black and white color scheme. This traditional design is a departure from Ashby's all white police cars of recent years. The new color scheme projects increased police presence in the community due to its high visibility. The two-tone design is thought to be more eye-catching, especially in a snowy area. Black and white cars are easily recognizable as police cars to people from other parts of the country and around the world. Many departments around the country are returning to the traditional black and white.

Ashby Dispatch Department Announces New 911 Equipment |
| |
The Ashby Dispatch Department has received all new 911 equipment at no cost to the town. The equipment features maps of caller locations including wireless calls and digital recorders so calls can be played back immediately. Previously, wireless callers to 911 spoke to a State Police operator who had to transfer the call to the appropriate police department if known. Now those calls will come directly to the Ashby dispatcher saving time and possible confusion.
The Ashby Dispatch Department supports the Fire, Police, Highway, and EMS departments. Department head, Joyce Hopkins, managed the grant from the Statewide Emergency Telecommunications Board. The funds originally come from the E911 surcharge on cell phone bills. The grant paid for about $300,000 of state of the art equipment and installation. Hopkins also recently applied for and received a $5000 grant for dispatcher training in the new 911 equipment and domestic violence, suicide prevention, and advanced law enforcement dispatcher training.

| |
The Ashby Police Department reports on the success of the Governor's Highway Safety Bureau traffic safety grant (FY-2007).
The Ashby Police Department participated in this grant program with law enforcement agencies across the state to conduct extra, targeted enforcement to improve traffic safety. The six mobilizations each concentrated on different traffic safety issues such as, drunk driving
, seat belt use
, and aggressive driving. Some of the mobilizations are centered on holidays that historically result in more deadly motor vehicle crashes. These mobilizations are coordinated with nationwide efforts and high profile media campaigns.
The Ashby Police Department received about $4000 to put extra officers on our roads. This resulted in 146 traffic patrol hours, eight arrests, five criminal complaint applications, and 406 car stops resulting in fines and warnings.
Patrolman Fred Alden managed this successful operation with his characteristic attention to detail and dedication to duty. All members who participated are commended for their ongoing efforts to make Ashby's roads safer.
